IT Project Escalation: Translation Outcomes as Antecedents to the Four Factors of Escalation Theory
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent IT project escalation research has seen a multi-method approach to understanding what causes escalation in IT projects. Specifically, Mähring, et al. (2004) examined the DIA Computerized Baggage Handling System failure using both the traditional four factor escalation theory model and Actor-Network Theory’s (ANT) translation stage. Mähring, et al.’s findings suggested that both theoretical approaches provide complementary, albeit mutually exclusive methods for examining IT project escalation. This paper proposes an integrated view of the two theoretical approaches by examining the relationships between the four elements of Actor-Network Theory’s translation stage and the four factors (project, psychological, social, and organizational) of the traditional escalation theory model. This paper reports on research-inprogress to develop an instrument to measure the outcomes of the problematization, interessement, enrollment, and mobilization stages. Discussion of the utility of such an instrument and hypothesized relationships between the translation stages and four factors will be discussed.

Understanding Antecedents of Interpersonal Conflict in Information Systems
Interpersonal conflict in information systems development (ISD) projects is common and has been identified as being detrimental to project outcomes. Prior research has primarily focused on assessing the impact of interpersonal conflict on ISD project outcomes. As such, little is known about the antecedents to conflict in ISD contexts. It is proposed here that understanding the conditions that l...
متن کاملThe Performance Paradox: An Examination of Goal Setting and Escalation Theories
This research examines the phenomenon of escalation of commitment to a failing course of action in IT projects. The research in the domain of escalation has been to identify the antecedents to the escalation behavior that individuals are known to exhibit in escalation situations. The escalation theory advocates that when individual commit more resources (in terms of effort, time and money) in e...
متن کاملWhy Software Projects Escalate: An Empirical Analysis and Test of Four Theoretical Models
Software projects can often spiral out of control to become runaway systems that far exceed original budget and schedule projections. The behavior that underlies many runaway systems can best be characterized as escalation of commitment to a failing course of action. The objectives of this study were to: (1) understand the extent to which IS projects are prone to escalate, (2) compare the o...
متن کاملEscalation and premature termination in MIS projects: the role of real options
Purpose of the paper This paper examines how the real option theory is applicable to evaluation of cases of escalation and premature termination of Management Information Systems (MIS) projects. Design/methodology/approach We compare the implications of psychological and economic escalation theories with lessons from the real option theory as applied to MIS projects. Then, we examine published ...
متن کاملAn Investigation of the Relationships between Goals and Software Project Escalation: Insights from Goal Setting and Goal Orientation Theories
Escalation of commitment is manifested as a behavior in which an individual resists withdrawing from a failing course of action despite negative feedback, and it is an enduring problem that occurs in a variety of situations, including R&D investment decisions and software project overruns. To date, a variety of theoretical explanations have been offered as to what causes escalation of commitmen...
